H.S. tourney report: Nordonia, Coventry take Tomahawk titles

FAIRLAWN  — The Coventry High School boys and Nordonia girls earned titles during the annual Tomahawk Bowling Invitational on Sunday at AMF Riviera Lanes.

This was a complete Baker System format tournament, with teams rolling 14 Baker System games during qualifying before the respective fields were cut to the top eight teams for best two-of-three match play rounds by seed. It was bowled on a house oil pattern.

In the boys division, No. 3 seed Coventry defeated Nordonia in the title match after stopping No. 6 seed Medina and No. 2 seed Copley in earlier match-play rounds. 

Cuyahoga Falls was the No. 1 seed with 2,804 total pinfall during qualifying, finishing 10 pins ahead of Copley.

In the girls division, Minerva earned the No. 1 seed with 2,473, finishing 137 pins ahead of Nordonia (2,336), with Struthers sitting third (2,297).

After defeating Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in the first round of match play, the Lions fell to No. 4 seed Fairport Harbor Harding during the semifinals. Nordonia, which stopped Springfield and Struthers in earlier rounds, stopped Fairport in the title match.

HORNET INTERGRITY JV

CANTON — East Canton Blue girls and Berea Midpark’s boys captured titles during the annual Hornet Integrity Junior Varsity tournament Saturday at Eastbury Bowling Center.

The junior varsity field, with included 17 boys and nine girls teams, bowled three regular games and five Bakers System games during the event.

East Canton Blue took honors with 2,732 total pinfall, finishing 211 pins ahead of East Canton’s Gold team.

East Canton’s Blue’s Alayna Bowling led the field with a 531 series on the house oil pattern, with Carrollton’s Zara Bullock finishing second (461) and East Canton’s Gold’s Elyse Mallette taking third (456).

In the boys division, Midpark finished with 3,480, with Lake taking second (3,352) and Green in third (3,277).

Green’s Jason Bidinger was the top individual with 617 as four players shot 600 or higher. He was followed by Carrollton’s Khan Green (613), Triway’s Jonathon Eikleberry (607) and Perry’s Luca Hifinger (607)

East Canton will host its varsity tournament, the Sectional Warmup, at 10 a.m. Saturday also at Eastbury.
