Tourney report: Csuhta earns third OMT victory; Klonowski is Sunday

COLUMBUS — Wadsworth right-hander Dale Csuhta became the third three-time champion in the Ohio Matchplay Tournament series by topping Kirby Allen 208-197 on Saturday in the finals of the Palace-Qubica Classic at the Columbus Square Bowling Palace.

Csuhta, the No. 5 seed entering match play following the five-game qualifier, defeated John Shreve Sr.,, the lone player in the field over age 70, 256-217 in the semifinals of the 12-player single-game match-play round. The tourney drew a field of 54 players agent 50 and older, bowling on the Hammer QLD 42-foot oil pattern.

Alan Hoover was the qualifying leader with 1,212 total pinfall, followed by Brent Watson (1,199), Dan Beiter (1,187) and Dave Davison (1,183). All received first-round byes in match play — and lost their matches in the second round. Csuhta finished with 1,167.

Craig Houser earned the final qualifying spot with 1,103, 25 pins ahead of John Shreve Jr. Shreve received the final cash spot. Neil Kassel (14th) and Aaron Staples (14th) received the 60-and-over checks.

The next OMT event is the third annual Wayne Webb’s Classic, set for 1 p.m. Feb. 10 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl. Entry fee is $110. See tourney information here:

KLONOWSKI IS SUNDAY

The 32nd annual John Klonowski Memorial Scratch Singles is sent for 9 a.m. Feb. 4 at Eastbury Bowling Center in Canton.

Entry fee is $120, with bowlers rolling a five-game qualifier before the field is cut to the top 20 for round of two-game elimination match play culminating with a five-bowler stepladder finals.

First place is $1,600 plus a free entry into the 2025 event based on a 90-player field.

SENIOR TRIO: A senior trio tournament is set for 11 a.m. Feb. 16 at Park Centre Lanes.The events is open to players age 50 or older and it is a handicap event, with handicap being based on 70 percent of a 660 cap for the three-person team. Entry fee is $105 per team, with first place being worth $750, based on 24 teams. The format is three regular games to determine a winner, Poling Painting is the tournament sponsor Brackets and eliminator side action will be available. MARCH MADNESS: The 11th annal March Madness tournament, sponsored vy KreativeTouch Property Services, is set for 9 a.m. March 3 at Clutch Lanes and Sports Center in Cuyahoga Falls. Entry fee is $100. The format will mirror the NCAA Basketball Tournament, with bowlers beginning with a three-game qualifying round. Bowlers will then be ranked in four divisions in the round of 64. Winners of two-game matches advance to th eround of 32 with the same format to cut to subsequent rounds until the championship match. A $100 bonus will be awarded to the top seed in each division. COLLEGE BOWL TOURNAMENTS: The next College Bowl Tournaments event is a senior-junior doubles event set for 10 a.m. Feb. 10 at Eastbury Bowling Center. Doubles teams must have one bowler age 50 or older, but can have two. Entry fee is $130 per team, with teams rolling four qualifying games before the field is cut to the top four teams for single-game elimination matches.
