ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Indian Valley took a 416-pin lead after the opening three games and cruised to the title during Tuesday’s OHSAA East District Division II sectional tournament at St. Clair Lanes.
The Braves finished with 3,945 total pinfall after rolling a session high 1,081 during the six-game Baker System block to take top honors in the 23-team field.
The field was divided into two sessions, with Indian Valley coming out of the afternoon session. The format was three regular team games and six Baker System games on the OHSAA sectional-district oil pattern.
The top six teams and top six individuals who were not members of those teams advanced to the noon Feb. 21 district tournament at Legacy Lanes in Coshocton.
Joining the Braves at district will be Carrollton (3,504), Harrison Central (3,430), Conotton Valley (3,394), Barnesville (3,391) and Sandy Valley (3,383).
The Cardinals shot 215 and 181 during their final two Baker System games to edge Minerva (200-163) by just four pins for the final qualifying spot.
Indian Valley posted three of the top four individual scores with junior Colton Long taking top honors with a 704 series, followed by senior Daniel Grewell with 654 and junior Brentin Irwin with 608. Conotton Valley senior Bobby Brennan was third overall with 642, and tied Long for high-game honors with 257.
Barnesville was the lone team from the morning session to advance.
EAst Liverpool sophomore Jayden McDole, who finished seventh overall, was the top individual qualifier with 554, followed by Claymont junior Tyson Shetler (553), Martins Ferry senior Walker Romshak (535), River View senior Cam Collopy (524), St. John Central sophomore Kyle Baker (512) and Minerva sophomore Owen Frazier (511), who finished just one pin ahead of Tuscarawas Central Catholic junior Nick Williams (510) for the final qualifying spot.
Junior Bryce Taylor led Carrollton with 531 while sophomore Nathan Downing joined Brennan in leading the Rockets with 575. Junior Conlin Warwick was high for Sandy Valley with 532.
The girls Division II sectional was Wednesday at Boulevard Lanes in Dover.
