Youth bowling: East sweeps during Stark Conference All-Star matches; singles titles awarded during OHSBCA’s junior high through senior singles championships

CANTON — The East scored a sweep of both the boys and girls divisions during Saturday 18th annual Stark County High School Bowling Conference All-Star Matches at Eastbury Bowling Center.

Teams representing all 18 teams were selected to bowl in the event by their coaches, with teams bowling two regular team games followed by six Baker System games.

EAST BOYS EARN WIN

In the boys division, the East took a 2,067-1,857 lead after the two regular games, and then added 1,322 during Bakers for a 3,389-3,090 win.

Louisville senior Michael Emerick Jr. turned in the high game of the session with 247 in Game 1 for the East, followed by Lake junior Zac Abbott with 245 as the team shot 1074 in Game 1. Emerick the only player to roll two games for the East, also finished with a 419 series.

For the West, Canton Central Catholic senior Philip Yingling posted both the high game (226) and high series (451). McKinley junior Jonathan Waggoner also shot 418 for the West.

The East team finished with 243, 204 and 254 during its final three Baker games to run away with the win.

The East boys were coached by North Canton Hoover’s Nichole Wells and Chad Wensel while the West was coached by Triway’s Vince Yoder and Central Catholic’s Taylor Devaul.

EAST GIRLS HOLD ON

The East girls shot 1,836 during the opening two games to build a 226-in lead en route to a 2,743-2,675 win.

For the East, Carrollton senior Zoey Elliott turned in both the high game (259) and high series (452) as the lone player to bowl two games. GlenOak senior Kathryn Chech also had a 256 as the East shot 1,044 in Game 1.

For the West, Triway senior Addy Meshew had the high game of 214 en route to a 409 series.

The West shot 182, 147 and 147 its final three Baker games to cut their deficit after the East went 157, 128 and 118.

The East was coached by Minerva’s Dana and Megan Keister, while the West was coached by Triway’s Corby Anderson and Louisville’s Courtney Stallman.

The conference’s annual banquet is set for 1 p.m. April 7 at Raintree Golf Club and Banquet Center in Uniontown.

STATE CLASS TITLES AWARDED

COLUMBUS — The Ohio High School Bowling Coaches Association held their annual State Singles Championships for grades seven through 12 on Saturday and Sunday at HP Lanes, which hosted the OHSAA State Team Championships earlier this month.

Bowlers competed on the OHSAA state oil pattern and rolled five qualifying games before fields were cut to the top four or eight (depending of field sizes) for single-game match plat.

SATURDAY ACTION

Competitors in the middle school, freshman and sophomore divisions battled Saturday, with 87 players participating.

Ashland’s Landon Dreibelbis, the No. 8 seed following qualifying, defeated teammate Luke Rhine 202-155 to claim the sophomore boys title.

Gahanna Lincoln’s Lacey Holden stopped Olentangy Berlin’s Madelyn Pigott 158-123 to top the sophomore girls.

Freshmen winners were Columbus’ Elliott Gordon and Troy’s Baylie Massingill, who defeated Medina Highland’s Gracie Dunne 218-192 in the finals.

Junior high winners were Donovan Sloppy and Lydia Gordon.

SUNDAY ACTION

Rootstown’s Justin Miller defeated Jonathan Alder’s Drew Damron 220-211 to top the junior division of 56 players Sunday. Miller was the No. 2 entering match play.

Among the junior girls, Wilmington’s Kylie Fisher defeated Fairport Harbor Harding’s Jillian Justinger 191-173 to claim the win in the 23-player field.

Among the seniors, Midview’s Alex Fedyszyn finished atop a 49-player field by stopping Creston’s Reece Kramer 204-175. Conotton Valley’s Bobby Brennan finished fourth and North Canton Hoover’s Jack Wells was eighth in the division.

Among the senior girls, Licking Valley’s Olivia Strait defeated Triway’s Emma Yoder 209-187 to claim the title. Triway’s Addyson Meshew also finished sixth, with Tallmadge’s DeAndrea Elijah taking fourth.
