NORTH CANTON — Four 800 series and eight 300 games were rolled as the Stark County USBC completed its 1034d annual Open Championships recently at Park Centre Lanes.
Alliance’s Justin McIlvain, who captured the tournament’s all-events scratch title with 2,239, led the event with an 824 series, including one of the 300 games. He finished just one pin ahead of Akron’s Ray Cook (2,238), with Norton’s Jeremy Thompson taking third with 2,197.
Other 800 series came from Bud Stebbins (815), Dustin Dingler (805) and Peyton Krumlauf (801), all during doubles competition. John Price had the lone 300 during the team event, while other 300s came from Dingler, Thompson, Ryan Trowbridge, Stebbins, McIlvain, Cook and Mark Herdlick.
Canton’s Austin Burwell captured the all-events handicap title with 2,406 total pinfall, followed by Cook (2,277) and Thompson (2,260).
North Canton’s Kristi McDermitt, who turned in the high women’s series of the event with 770, took the handicap singles title with 824, followed by Alliance’s Alex Bugara (798) and Massillon’s Justin Butts (792).
Other top women’s series came from Kamryn Smith (747), Renae Shafer (720), Tiffany Schmitt (710), Sarah Edwards (708) and Jessica Ball (701). Averi Hawkins, Edwards and McDermitt each shot 279 and Edards added 276 while Schmitt had 274 and 269.
In handicap doubles, the team of Tucker Robbins and Krumlauf took honors with 1,573, with Louisivlle’s Derrick Simon and Louis Stansbury finishing second with 1,543, followed by Alliance’s Tony Cooper and Joe Matyas with 1,530.
Champions will be honored during the Stark County USBC’s annual meeting, set for May 22 at Meadowlake Golf Course in Canton.

HDP also has set several events for the coming months:
- A Scratch Doubles event is set for 7 p.m. May 24 at Freeway Lanes in Parma. Entry fee is $120 with teams bowling three games.
- The HDP Masters is May 25 and 26 at RollHouse Parma. Entry fee is $125. Bowlers will roll five qualifying games Saturday morning then five more games in the afternoon until the field is cut to the top 16. Those bowlers will return Sunday morning (Saturday pinfall carries over) for five more games until the field is cut to the top eight for two-game match play. Following that round, the four winners will bowl in a stepladder format. First place will be worth $2,500.
- An HDP Scratch Mixed Shootout is at 7 p.m. June 28 at North Woods Lanes in Macedonia. Entry fee is $120, with teams bowling three games.
- The HDP Queens is June 29 and 30 at North Woods Lanes in Macedonia. Entry fee is $105, with first place being worth $2,500. Trisha Reid is the defending champion. Bowlers will bowl four games Saturday morning and four more Saturday afternoon before the field is cut to the top 16 for four more games Sunday, with pins from Saturday carrying over. After those four games, the field will be cut to the top eight for two-game match play by seed. Those winners will then bowl a stepladder finals.
The group also has announced the dates for its’s Christmas in July tournament. It will be held July 6, 7, 13 and 14 at North Woods Lanes in Macedonia. This is a handicap event, with competition in seven divisions, including seniors, mixed and ladies. Two shits will be held per day. See the Facebook page for more information.

MEGA EVENTS The $10,000 HP Lanes MEGA event is set for June 8 and 9 at HP Lanes in Columbus with a $300 entry fee. Bowlers will roll eight-game qualifying shifts at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. June 8 before the field is cut to the top 1 in 5 for the Cashers Round on Sunday at 10 a.m., with six more games bowled. The field is then cut to the top eight for a modified stepladder finals. There also is an option doubles event set for 7 p.m. June 7 at HP Lanes with a $200 entry fee. HILES TOURNAMENTS: The fourth annual Pittsburgh Open is set for May 25-26 at Meadows Lanes inside Hollywood Casino in Washington, Pa. Entry fee is $75 for the handicapped event, with five squads set over two days and the finals set for May 26 at 7 p.m. Bowlers bowl four qualifying games with six bowlers from each squad making the finals. OHIO MASTERS: The 2024 Bowler X Ohio Masters will be held Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at Eastbury Bowling Center in Canton. The event is open only to adult bowlers sanctioned in Ohio. No youth bowlers are permitted to enter. Entry fee is $100. Bowlers will bowl five qualifying games beginning at 11 a.m. Aug. 31. The field then will be cut to the top 50 percent of the field, which will bowl five additional games at 5:30 p.m. with pins from the early block carrying over. The field then will be cut again to the top 32 (based on 120 entries) for single-elimination, two-game match play by seed until a champion is declared. The field is limited to 128 players.
