Tourney report: Liederbach, Allen lead fields at HDP Christmas in July event

MACEDONIA — Final official results are in for the Hit Dem Pockets’ annual Christmas in July Tournament, which was held the past two weekends at North Woods Lanes.

Competition was held in six total divisions, including doubles and singles, during the handicapped event. More than 450 individuals participated in the four day event, with three shifts per day.

In doubles, the team of Tyreece Gray and Maxie Scott topped the handicap division with 1,515, finishing 45 pins ahead of runner-up Jim Grenwis and Charmaine Allen. Frank Testa and Dean Vargo topped the scratch doubles division with 1,515, with Vargo and Dylan Mishak taking second (1,498).

Allen also was part of the mixed doubles winner with William Schumacher, finishing with 1,504. In fact, Allen was part of the top three teams in that division, joining Grenwis in second (1,470) and Jason Bowles in third (1,426).

Ryan Liederbach cashed in the top 10 with three different partners in handicap doubles and twice in scratch doubles.

In singles, Liederbach topped the handicap division with 794, finishing five pins ahead of Ti Lynch (789). Vargo topped the scratch division with 821, 27 pins ahead of Liederbach, with Lynch taking third (783).

Allen led the ladies singles division with 789, followed by Kendra Mathis (736) and Kelly Jackson (726). Ricky Coleman was high in the ages 55 and older senior singles with 731, followed by Marie Scott (726) and Romeo Coleman (707).

IRON SHARPENS IRON: Kyle Dunnecaptured last week’s Iron Sharpens Iron summer sweeper at Roseland Lanes in Oakwood Village. Friday’s event will be contested on Kegel’s Main Street V2 pattern, which is a house oil pattern. The event is set for 7 p.m. again at Roseland Lanes. SPINS AKRON SWEEPER: The next Spins Bowl Akron doubles scratch sweeper is set for 4 p.m. July 21 at Spins Bowl Akron. Entry fee is $110 per team, with teams rolling four games before the field is cut to the top four for the stepladder finals. For information, contact Frank Dallas on Facebook.

SUMMER SPORT SHOT SERIES: The Mt. Lebanon Sports Shot Summer Series will be bowling on the PBA Wolf oil pattern Friday night. Entry fee is $45, with the evening beginning at 8 p.m. at Mount Lebanon (Pa.) Lanes. Bowlers roll four games before the field is cut to the top 32. Costs for juniors, U.S. veterans and 55-and-older senior players is $40. 0. The events have drawn 1,056 players to this point. MSBS AKRON CHALLENGE: The Midwest Scratch Bowling Series Akron Challenge is set for 11 a.m. July 28 at Station 300 in Akron. Entry fee is $90, with bowlers rolling five qualifying games before the field is cut to the top 24 (based on 96 entries), when they will compete in a two-game eliminator round, with the field again being cut in half. MONEY IN THE BANK: Bowlamania III: Money in the Bank is set for 11 a.m. July 20 at Wickliffe Lanes. Entry fee is $40, with squad set for 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for the handicap event. This is an amateur singles event, with bowlers rolling three games. There are optional ladies side events available for a $15 additional fee.

TRIPLE T TOURNAMENT: Triple T’s “The Big One” singles event is set for July 20 and 21 at Toledo Sports Center in Toledo. Entry fee is $225, with first place paying $12,000, based on 180 entries out of a maximum of 220. Squads are set for 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. July 20 with bowlers rolling seven games. LEGACY SCRATCH: The Put Up or Shut Up Head-to-Head Scratch Tournament is set for 10 a.m. July 21 at Legacy Lanes and Lounge in Coshocton. Entry fee is $70 for the scratch event. Bowlers bowl three games against an opponent, with total pinfall advancing. Each subsequent round and match is two games, with a new opponent for each round. Also, Legacy will be hosting a Baker Bash five-player scratch sweeper at 11 a.m. Aug. 18. Teams will bowl 20 Bakr System Games before the field is cut to the top five for a best-of-three stepladder finals. OHIO MASTERS: The 2024 Bowler X Ohio Masters will be held Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at Eastbury Bowling Center in Canton. The event is open only to adult bowlers sanctioned in Ohio. No youth bowlers are permitted to enter. Entry fee is $100. Bowlers will bowl five qualifying games beginning at 11 a.m. Aug. 31. The field then will be cut to the top 50 percent of the field, which will bowl five additional games at 5:30 p.m. with pins from the early block carrying over. The field then will be cut again to the top 32 (based on 120 entries) for single-elimination, two-game match play by seed until a champion is declared. The field is limited to 128 players. AKRON OPEN: The 2024 Akron Open is set for Aug. 24 and 25 at Station 300 in Akron. Station 300 currently is installing new lane surfaces and a new scoring system that will be operational in time for this event. Entry fee is $130, with bowlers having 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. six-game squads available on a house oil pattern. Following six games, the field will be cut to the top one-in-five for Aug. 25 9 a.m. cashers’ round, with pins carrying over. The field then will be cut to the top 24, with pins carry over, to bowl five more games before the field is cut to the top five for the stepladder finals.
