Tourney report: Liederbach continues PBA regional roll; Allen, Cowper take JTBA titles in Akron

GROVE CITY — Ryan Liederbach earned his fourth regional title in the past five PBA Central Region events after topping the field at the PBA Bowlero-Groce City Open on Saturday at AMF Stardust Lanes.

The 27-year-old Northfield two-handed left-hander defeated Ryan Speer 203-166 in the title match to earn the $2,200 top prize in the 58-player field during the one-day event.

Bowlers rolled eight qualifying games before the field was cut to the top 12 for elimination match-play rounds.

Liederbach, the No. 12 seed following qualifying after averaging 206.50, had to win a one-game rolloff against Sunbury’s Aidan Furukawa to advance to match play after both tied at 1,652 total pinfall.

Liederbach stopped Ethan McDonald 2-1 in the first round of match play, winning the final game 187-182, before stopping Bailey Mavrick (2-0) and top-seeded Ric McCormick in the semifinals 224-207.

Speer, the No. 2 seed following qualifying after averaging 227.50, topped Brent Boho 246-197 in the other semifinal.

Liederbach, who owns four titles in 11 events this season including three in a row at one point, has huge lead in the region’s point list with 16,010 to second-place Graham Fach’s 9,870. He also has earned $13,485 this season.

The Central Region’s next event is the PBA Boss Snow Plows-O’Brien Auto-Radical Central Open, seen for Sept. 27-29 in Fishers, Ind.

JTBA IN AKRON

AKRON — Coventry’s Wade Allen, Brooklyn’s Alex Cowper, Mackenzie Pilny and Asa Wilson Perry claimed division titles at the Junior Tournament Bowlers Association held the JTBA Akron Youth Open last weekend at Spins Bowl Akron.

Allen, the No, 12 seed after the five-game qualifier in a field of 56 players, stopped No. 2 seed Aidan Furukawa 460-334 in the two-game title match the 18U division.

Lake’s Zachary Abbott was the No. 1 seed with 1,133, but fell in the second round to Brantyn Long 428-333.

Cowper, No. 6 seeded in the 15U division, stopped No. 1 seed Christopher Hoyte 335-332 in the title match.

The next JTBA event is the Midwest USA Scholarship Tournaments Eliminator event, set for Aug. 21 at Beaver-Vu Bowl in Dayton. Go to http://www.jtba.com/schedule-24-25 for information.

LEGACY LANES; The team of Chris Emig, Cory Wagoner, Blaine Salsberry, Mike Stein and Austin Reinserts took honors in the third annual Five-Man Baker Bash Scratch Sweeper at Legacy Lanes and Lounge in Coshocton. The event drew eight tams, with the team of Jason :Tom, Kyle Jones, Josh Colley, Richard Stevens and Amber Sells taking second. The center will host a fall sweeper at 1 p.m. Sept. 15. OHIO MASTERS: The 2024 Bowler X Ohio Masters will be held Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at Eastbury Bowling Center in Canton. The event is open only to adult bowlers sanctioned in Ohio. No youth bowlers are permitted to enter. Entry fee is $100. Bowlers will bowl five qualifying games beginning at 11 a.m. Aug. 31. The field then will be cut to the top 50 percent of the field, which will bowl five additional games at 5:30 p.m. with pins from the early block carrying over. The field then will be cut again to the top 32 (based on 120 entries) for single-elimination, two-game match play by seed until a champion is declared. The field is limited to 128 players. AKRON OPEN: The 2024 Akron Open is set for Aug. 24 and 25 at Station 300 in Akron. Station 300 has installed new lane surfaces and a new scoring system that will be operational in time for this event. Entry fee is $130, with bowlers having 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. six-game squads available on a house oil pattern. Following six games, the field will be cut to the top one-in-five for Aug. 25 9 a.m. cashers’ round, with pins carrying over. The field then will be cut to the top 24, with pins carry over, to bowl five more games before the field is cut to the top five for the stepladder finals. There also will be a kickoff doubles event at 7 p.m. Aug. 23 with a $200 entry fee. Bowlers will roll four games to determine the winner. SPINS BOWL SWEEPER: Another Spins Bowl Akron Doubles Scratch Sweeper is set for 4 p.m. Aug. 25 at Spins Bowl Akron with a $110 entry fee. Teams bowl four games before the field is cut to the top four for stepladder finals. For information, contact Frank Dallas via Facebook.

HDP: The Hit Dem Pockets Wonder Twins Ultimate Team Challenge is set for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at Wickliffe Lanes. This is a two-day event, and four-player teams must bowl both days. Teams bowl three games as a team and three more as two teams of doubles on Saturday followed by three games as singles players on Sunday. Entry fee is $400 per team ($100 per person).
