Tourney report: H.S. conference Alumni event set Sunday

The annual Stark County High School Bowling Conference Alumni Tournament is set for 10 a.m. Oct. 27 at Park Centre Lanes in North Canton.

Each team member must represent the same high school, either through graduation or coaching. If you moved here from out of state, you may bowl for the school district where you reside. 

This is a Baker System event to be bowled on the 2024 OHSAA State Championships oil pattern. Teams will roll 12 Baker games during qualifying to determine the top six based on 20 teams. There will be a second-chance tournament available for teams not making the cut.

Match play will be by seed with a best three-of-five Baker format used.

Entry fee is $180 per team. This is a fund-raiser for the SCHSBC.

PBA REGIONAL

Dayton’s Brian Kretzer defeated Andrew Rettig in a best-of-three final to capture Sunday’s PBA50 Legacy Lanes Central Open at Legacy Lanes in Coshocton. Kretzer, a 58-year-old right-hander with 12 career titles, was the No. 5 seed following qualifying in the 25-player field. Springfield left-hander Michael Haggitt was the No. 1 seed after leading qualifying with a 204.25 average over eight games on the PBA Roth 42 oil pattern. Eight players made the cut to Sunday’s match-play finals, with Kretzer topping Michael Lianeza 3-2 in his opening best-of-five match before stopping the top-seeded Haggitt 2-0 in the semifinals. Rettig advanced by sweeping Eddie Graham in the first round and Joe Scarborough in the semifinals. The next PBA Central Region event is a regular combined event with the Midwest Region on Nov. 2 and 3 at Championship Lanes in Anderson, Ind. See complete Legacy results below:

YOUTH TOURNAMENTS

The Stark County USBC is holding a Halloween Youth Doubles at noon Oct. 26 at Park Centre Lanes. The event will be bowled on a house oil pattern with a $60 entry fee per team. There will be divisions for 18U, 15U and 12U and teams can be any combination of boys and girls. Teams will bowl two individual games and four Baker System games. This is a handicap event. OHIO MATCHPLAY TOURNAMENTS: The next OMT event is the fourth anniversary/Veterans’ Day event, set for 1 p.m. Nov. 9 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in Columbus. Entry fee is $110, with bowlers rolling five qualifying games. It will be rolled on a modified house oil pattern, with $1,200 guaranteed for first and $600 for second, based on 48 entries, courtesy of Tom Carter. HILES TOURNAMENTS: The next HBT event is the Baker Doubles set for Nov. 9 at Spins Bowl Pittsburgh. Entry fee is $200 per team and the field is limited to 60 teams. ELIMINATOR TOURNAMENT: The eliminator event set for 10:30 a.m. Nov. 16 at HP Lanes in Columbus has been canceled.

OHIO STATE USBC: Tournament sites have been established for the 2025 Ohio State USBC Open, Women’s and Youth tournaments. The Ohio State USBC Open tournament will be weekends from Feb. 15 through May 4 in Summit County. The team event will be at AMF Riviera Lanes while the doubles and singles will be at Station 300 (formerly Stonehedge). The women’s championships will be weekends from March 22 through April 13 in Stark County, with the team event at Eastbury Bowling Center and singles and doubles at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes. The youth championships will be held April 5-6 and 12-13 at Wabash Lanes in New Philadelphia. Entry forms for all events are available on-line at: https://ohiostateusbc.com/

DOUBLE L TOURNAMENTS: A super senior-senior handicap doubles tournament is set for 1 p.m. Nov. 2 at Roseland Lanes in Oakwood with a $100 per team entry fee. Super senior is ages 60 and older while senior is ages 50 through 59. This is a handicap event. Entry fee is $40 per couple, including jackpots, with first-place worth $200 based on 42 entries. Teams will bowl four games — two regular and two 9-pin, no-tap. ASHLAND MASTERS: Brooklyn left-hander Kevin Cowper defeated Ty McKinney to claim honors in the Ashland Masters on Sunday at Luray Lanes. Cowper, the No. 4 seed following the five-game Saturday qualifier, averaged 240.60 over his 15 total games in the event. He had to win five matches en route to the title, stopping Chris Steele in the semifinals while McKinney defeated Cassidy Schaub. See the qualifying and match-play results below:

CENTRAL OHIO MASTERS: Michael Tang defeated Kyle Cook 428-421 in a two-game match to capture the Central Ohio USBC Masters on Sunday at Sequoia Pro Bowl in Columbus. Tang was the No. 2 qualifier in the 46-player field behind No. 1 Chad Roberts, who finished with 1,307 total pinfall for the five games. Roberts fell to Cook in the semifinals 439-402.
