COLUMBUS — Coldwater’s boys and Rootstown’s girls emerged with titles during the 20th annual Ohio High School State Invitational Kickoff tournament Saturday at HP Lanes.
Teams bowled three regular games and two Baker System games during qualifying before the respective fields were cut to the top 16 for three-game Baker cumulative match play by seed. There were 16 boys and girls teams in the field.
In the boys division, top-seeded Coldwater defeated No. 10 seed Coventry 635-524 in the title match, with the former shooting 244 in the final game to secure the title.
Coldwater topped the qualifying field with 3,523, finishing 331 pins Fahd of Marion Pleasant.
Individually, Versailles’ Blake Henry led the field with a 749 series, followed by Coldwater’s Austin Burden (657) and Brady Mathewson (652)
Other members of the eight-player all-tournament team were Rootstown’s Justin Miller (644) and Coventry’s Wade Allen (623).
In the girls division, No. 9 seed Rootstown stopped No. 6 seed Mechanicsburg 460-440 to claim the title. After a 125 in Game 2, the Rovers shot 169 in Game 3 to earn the win.
Rootstown topped No. 1 seed Napoleon 466-463 in the quarterfinal round before defeating Urbana 602-485 to reach the finals.
Napoleon topped the field during qualifying with 2,848, followed by St. Marys Memorial (2,802) and Versailles (2,541).
St. Marys Memorial’s Kaleigh Caywood was the top individual with 619, followed by Arianna Kiessling of Napoleon (595).

ELKS INVITATIONAL: Centerville’s boys and Troy’s girls earned titles during the Centerville Elks Invitational a Poelking South. ?The format was three regular games and six Baker System games. The Elks topped the boys 17-team field with 4,574, followed by Northmont (4,231) and Troy (4,174). Troy won the girls division with 3,889, followed by Celina (3,828) and Fort Recovery (3,738). Centerville’s Casey Lippincott was the high individual with 750, followed by Cincinnati La Salle’s JT Schneider with 740, including a 300 game. Troy’s Baylie Massingill was the top girl and high overall with 781, followed by Fort Recovery’s Ella Schoen (697).
BAKER MARATHON: Ashland’s boys and Gahanna Lincoln’s girls topped their respective fields during the Holiday Baker Marathon on Saturday at the Columbus Square Bowling Palace in Columbus. The format was 16 Baker games before the boys 27-team field and the girls 20-team field were cut to the top eight for best-of-three Baker match play by seed. Ashland, the No. 2 seed, defeated top-seeded Beavercreek 2-1 in the title match, winning Game 3 235-208. Lincoln, the No. 1 seed, topped the girls with a 2-1 win over No. 6 seed London, winning Game 3 167-142. See complete results below:
BRAVES INVITATIONAL: Indian Valley’s boys took honors in the third annual Indian Valley Invitational on Saturday at Cy Young Lanes in Newcomerstown. Sandy Valley finished third in the field. The Braves had three players on the all-tourney team including Colton Long (685), Brentin Irwin (605) and Cale Dinger (594). Also members of the team were Harrison Central’s Kobe Tennis (622) and Sandy Valley’s Colin Warwick (592).
