H.S. tourney report: Bradley sweeps at Mount Vernon; Boardman, Fairport Harbor top Rootstown Division I field; JVs shine at Eastbury

MOUNT VERNON — Hilliard Bradley High School swept both the girls and boys titles during the Mount Vernon Nazarene University Cougar Classic on Saturday at Colonial City Lanes in high school bowling tournament action.

The format was three regular games and five Baker System games before the field was cut to the top five teams for the stepladder finals.

The Jaquars boys, the No. 1 seed with 3,135 total pinfall, defeated No. 2 seed Jackson 2-1 in the best-of-three championship finals. Brian Nashalsky led Bradley in qualifying with a 536 series.

Jackson was led in the 10-team field by Alex Lovas’ tourney-high 574 series and 512 from Nick Langton. 

Wadsworth finished third overall after stoping Mount Vernon 2-0 and then falling to Bradley 2-1, dropping Game 3 137-114. Nate Weyand topped the Grizzlies with 503 in qualifying.

In the girls division, the Jaguars took the title by stopping top-seeded Wadsworth 2-1 in the best-of-three Baker finals, winning Game 3 135-124.

Wadsworth’s girls led qualifying with 2,972 in the 11-team field. The Grizzlies were led by Amelia Lutz with 484.

Jackson’s girls did not make the cut, by Rylee Dunn earned all-tourney team status with a 475 series.

ROOTSTOWN PREVIEW

KENT — The Fairport Harbor Harding girls and Boardman boys captured titles during the Rootstown Rovers Division I Sectional-District Preview on Saturday at Spins Bowl Kent.

The tournament format was three regular games followed by six Baker System games on the 2025 OHSAA Sectional-District oil pattern.

The Skippers girls, led by Jillian Justinger’s tourney-high 299 and high girls series of 674, finished with 3,747 total pinfall, finishing 123 pins ahead of second-place Boardman (3,624), with Nordonia (3,369) taking third. GlenOak was fifth in the field (3,119) and North Canton Hoover finished ninth (2,804).

In the boys division, the Spartans finished with 4,285, 197 pins ahead of second-place Cuyahoga Falls after trailing by 43 pins going into the Baker portion of the event.

Austin Rule led Boardman with 658 and Donnie Bagdassarian added 655.

GlenOak finished fourth overall in the boys division (3,809) and Hoover was eighth (3,356).

HORNET JV

CANTON — The Lake boys and Perry girls emerged with titles during the Hornet Junior Varsity Integrity Tournament on Saturday at Eastbury Bowling Center.

The format was three regular games followed by five Baker System games in qualifying before the field was cut to the top four in each division for best-of-three Baker System match play.

Lake’s boys, the No. 1 seed with 3,457 total pinfall, defeated No. 4 seed Wickliffe 2-0 in the finals. Joshua Trent led Lake during qualifying with a 556 series.

High boys series came fro Perry’s Ryland Satterfield with 583, including a high tourney game of 246.

In the girls division, No. 3-seeded Perry defeated top-seeded Akron Hoban 2-1 in the title match, winning Game 3 137-106. Hoban topped qualifying with 2,618 total pinfall. 

Hoban’s Bella Phillips (520) and Olivia Pander (471) were the top two individually in the girls division. Amelia Daugintis led Perry with 443.

ASHLAND BAKER BASH

ASHLAND — Ashland’s boys and Huber Heights Anthony Wayne’s girls captured titles during the annual Ashland Baker Bash on Saturday at Luray Lanes. 

New Philadelphia took second in the boys division and Lexington was the girls runner-up. No other details were available.
