H.S. bowling: IVC announces all-league teams; Minerva sets school, conference marks; matches from Feb. 4

East Canton swept three major awards as the Inter-Valley Conference announced its 2024-25 all-league high school bowling teams on Wednesday.

In the boys division, East Canton coach Todd Thomas was named coach of the year after leading the Hornets to a third-place finish overall in the conference.

Indian Valley senior Colton Long was.also named player of the year in voting among the conference coaches.

In all, three players for the conference runner-up Braves were named to the first team, with junior Cale Dinger and senior Brent Irwin joining Long. Claymont, which captured the conference title with 23 points (combination of regular-season matches and conference tournament placement), put junior Nathan Downing and senior Riley Milburn on the first team.

Other members of the eight-player first team were Newcomerstown junior Jaxson Mayo and Tuscarawas Central Catholic senior Nick Williams

In the girls division, East Canton junior Madison Lint was selected as player of the year by the coaches after the Hornets finished tied for the league title with Garaway.

Her father, Matt Lint, was named as coach of the year for the Hornets.

Garaway placed three players on the eight-player first team, including junior Harmony Clymer and seniors Lexi Era and Ava Starner.

In addition to Lint, East Canton had junior Logan McDonald on the first team. Conotton Valley placed two players — junior Lilly Booth and senior Kylie Galigher — on the first team along with Indian Valley junior Zoe Blickensderfer.

* Minerva’s boys set a Stark County High School Bowling Conference record for two-game series with their performance in a 3,060-2,462 victory over East Liverpool on Tuesday at Minerva Bowl. The Lions finished with 2,345 for their two games, which topped the previous mark of 2,332 set during the 2015-16 season by Triway. They opened with a 1,229 game, which sits sixth all time in the conference and broke Minerva’s school record of 1,178, set during the 2006-07 season. The Lions’ individual series included a pair of 500 series from Lane Hawk (503) and Owen Frazier (501). Others were Landon Jones (479), Kendrik Keister (435) and Xander Mueller (427).

* Wadsworth clinched its first Suburban League boys title Saturday during the Suburban League tournament and then topped Nordonia during a Tuesday match at Kolony Lanes. The Grizzlies girls, who have not won the league title since the 2015-16 season, upset three-time defending champion Nordonia 2,287-2,050 also on Tuesday. It ended the 2023 Division I state champion Knights’ winning streak of at least 47 matches, according to reports. Wadsworth’s girls can give the school a sweep of the Suburban League titles by topping Brecksville on Wednesday at Roseland Lanes.
