H.S. report: Division II sectionals held at four sites; Perry boys take Federal title

Division II sectional tournament opened high school bowling play in the Northeast District on Saturday and Sunday at four sites.

All sectional tournaments are three regular games and six Baker System games. Here is a look at who moved on to district at each site:

BOYS

STRUTHERS: LaBrae, Struthers, McDonald and Hubbard earned district berths during Saturday’s Division II boys sectional at Holiday Bowl. LaBrae topped the field with 4,163, followed by Struthers (4,089), McDonald (4,076) and Hubbard (3,987), which earned the final berth by 252 pins in the 15-team field. Struthers senior Dylan Woolensack shot a 300 in Game 3 of the regular games and topped the field with a 739 series. Individual advancers included Chris Large (Lakeview) 655; Chaise Henderson (Gerard) 647; Jacob Gerhard (Lordstown) 626; and Tyler Landers (Wellsville) 614.

WARREN: Cuyahoga Heights, Lake Catholic, Champion and Fairport Harbor Harding earned district qualifying spots during Sunday’s Division II sectional at Freeway Lanes-Warren. Cuyahoga Heights finished with 3,955, followed by Lake Catholic (3,936), Champion (3,905) and Fairport Harbor (3,762). The Skippers finished 44 pins ahead of Villa Angela-St. Joseph in the 15-team field. Cuyahoga Heights senior Donny Raymond led individual with a 738 series. Individual qualifiers included Evan Reid (Jefferson Area) 640; TJ Williams (Southington Chalker) 630; Hayden Venturella (Bloomfield) 608; and Carter Howard (Edgewood) 600.

MEDINA: Lutheran West, Coventry, Brookside and Firelands gained district berths during the Division II sectional Sunday at AMF Medina Lanes. Lutheran West topped the field with 4,027, followed by Coventry (3,778), Brookside (3,709) and Firelands (3,676), which finished 91 pins ahead of fifth-place Fairview. Brooklyn junior Adam Cowper led the individual field with a 723 series as the top individual qualifier. Other individual qualifiers included Logan Klamer (Clearview) 600; Jacob Godby (Open Door Christian) 594; and Bryan Wiesel’s (Fairview) 583. Coventry was led by sophomore Wade Allen with 625, fourth overall, and junior Aidan Jensen, who added 579.

The Division II boys district is set for 10 a.m. Feb. 21 at Roseland Lanes in Oakwood. The top four teams and top four individuals who are not on advancing teams will earn state tournament berths.

GIRLS

STRUTHERS: Struthers, Hubbard, Lakeview and LaBrae earned district berths during Saturday’s Division II girls sectional at Holiday Bowl. Struthers topped the field with 3,064 while Hubbard and Lakeview (3,064) tied for second and LaBrae (2,880) took the final spot by 180 pins over Southern Local in the 11-team field. Struthers senior Clare Coppola was the top individual with a 579 series. Individual qualifiers included Kara Vanderslice (Brookfield) 577; Hunter Dickson (Southern Local) 480; Luci Vigliotti (Youngstown Ursuline) 470; and Emily Perline (Maplewood) 441.

WARREN: Fairport Harbor Harding, Champion and Edgewood earned district berths at the girls Division II sectional at Freeway Lanes-Warrren on Sunday. Fairport topped the field with 3,656, followed by Champion (2,741) and Edgewood (2,681), which finished 124 pins ahead of Niles McKinley for the final spot in the seven-team field. Fairport seniors Jillian Justinger (584) and Mackenzie Pilny (574) went 1-2 among individuals. Individual qualifiers included Alie Ruchalski (Berkshire) 456; Kyra Coleman (Niles McKinley) 449; and Mikaela Fabo (Villa Angela-St. Jospeh) 440.

MEDINA: Open Door Christian, Elyria Catholic and Keystone earned district berths during the Division II girls sectional Sunday at AMF Medina Lanes. Open Door led the field with 3,041, followed by Elyria Catholic (2,980) and Keystone (2,803), which finished 67 pins ahead of Firelands for the final berth in the nine-team field. Open Door senior Gabriella Riba led the individuals with a 580 series. Individual qualifiers included Aubrey West (Firelands) 532; Isabella Rudnickas (Lutheran West) 502; and Katie Smith (Fireslands) 495.

The Division II girls district is set for 10 a.m. Feb. 22 at Roseland Lanes in Oakwood. The top four teams and top four individuals who are not on advancing teams will earn state tournament berths.

HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

Perry wrapped up the boys Federal League tile on Monday with a 2,726-2,695 victory over Lake at Park Centre Lanes.

The Panthers finished 6-1 in the league. They also have a 9-1 record in the Federal Division of the Stark County High School Bowling Conference to lead that division.
