College bowling: Walsh women top field at AHBA event

Walsh University’s women topped the field and the men finished fourth during the American Heartland Bowling Association’s first Roseland Open at Roseland Lanes in Oakwood.

For the women, junior Tara Oberlin led the Cavaliers with an 813 seriew, followed by junior Rachel Young with 803 and senior Kendall Schaar with 800.

Junior Ethan Gary led the men with 932 during the five-game qualifier.

Erie Community College topped the men’s division.

Only a few weeks remain in the 2024-2025 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate regular season, and this past weekend saw no shortage of excitement with 12 events being held around the country, including the two-day National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) West Open in Lawrence, Kan.

The NAIA West Open consisted of two events, with Day 1 having teams bowl five individual games and Day 2 consisting of 25 Baker games. Seventeen men’s varsity teams and 15 women’s varsity teams were in attendance for the event.

Day 1 saw the Ottawa-Kansas men close out their set with 1,112, 1,080 and 1,054 to prevail by over 250 pins, while the William Penn women started strong and came out on top by a similar margin.

Ottawa-Kansas’ Matthew Berg led all men with a five-game total of 1,130, with Peru State’s Issac Skalak right behind him in second with 1,119. Missouri Valley’s Wyatt Grunwald (1,096), Kansas Wesleyan’s Connor Thomas (1,047) and Baker’s PJ Dokolas (1,046) placed third through fifth, respectively.

On the women’s side, William Penn’s Lucy Mitchell led with 1,029 and was joined in the top five by teammate Caitlin Radliff, who had 958 and placed fifth. Culver-Stockton’s Rachel Moore was second with 987, Morningside’s Rachel Spier placed third with 986 and Grand View’s Isabel Tetmeyer finished fourth with 975.

The following day, the Hastings men finished first to clinch a win while the William Penn women won for the second straight day.

In other collegiate action:

* At the Mid Iowa Bowling Conference Championship in Waterloo, Iowa, the Wartburg men and Coe women took home titles.

* At the Griffith Baker in Deptford, New Jersey, the Monmouth women took down Fairleigh Dickinson in seven games to win.

* At the Columbia 300 Saints Invite in St. Louis, the Wichita State women avenged an opening-round loss to Wright State and won in seven games.

* At the Bobcat Classic in Greensburg, Pa., the Saint Vincent women went 8-1 in matches to claim the win.

* At the Big Ten Championships in Mount Prospect, Illinois, the Ohio State men and Purdue women won their brackets in match play to claim conference titles.

* At the other NAIA event of the weekend, the NAIA Southeast Open in Lawrenceville, Ga., the Webber International men and Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah women took Day 1 victories, while Pikeville swept Day 2.

* At the fourth Crossroads League event in Goshen, Ind., the Marian-Indiana men and women swept after advancing through bracket match play.

* Two events were held in Las Vegas, the Sin City Open and the Rebel Classic. The Grand Canyon men and women came out of the match-play bracket as winners of the Rebel Classic, while the San Jose State men and women swept the Sin City Open.
