Tourney report: Ohio State USBC Women’s tourney ends in Canton; Open takes week off in Akron

CANTON — One new leader emerged in doubles as the Ohio State USBC Women’s Championships at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes (doubles and singles) and Eastbury Bowling Center (team) concluded its final weekend.

In the doubles handicap division, Autumn Scott and Laura Pugh of Fredericton combined for 1,500 to take the top spot away from Deborah Auman and Heidi Beach of Hubbard by 47 pins.

The only two award scores shot during the four-week tournament were by Centerville’s Angel West, who highlighted Week 3 of the competition by compiling an 802 scratch series, and Dayton’s Micki Sumner rolled a 300 game during the first week.

West maintained the overall lead in all-events scratch with 2,052, finishing just one pin ahead of Centerville’s Shannon Pluhowski (2,051).

The team of Melissa Voytko and Charmaine Allen of Brunswick hold the scratch doubles lead with 1,346.

St. Henry’s Emily Brunswick continues to hold the lead in handicap all-events with 2,345, followed by Beloit’s Tanya Kyser (2,253) and Carrollton’s Jennifer Casey (2,232).

OHIO STATE USBC OPEN

AKRON — There were no changes in the top five of each category through nine weekends of the  Ohio State USBC Open Championships, being conducted at AMF Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn (team) and Station 300 (doubles and singles)  in Akron.

The tournament takes a break this weekend due to Easter, with the PBA Tournament of Champions being conducted at AMF Riviera Lanes.

Lewis Center’s Cassidy Schaub holds the overall lead in actual all-events with 2,096, followed by Dan Higgins with 2,037. The tournament runs weekends through May 4.

There is a new team handicap leader with Pla-Mor Lanes #13 from Coldwater taking the top spot with 3,505.

COLLEGE BOWL TOURNAMENTS

The final regular-season College Bowl Tournaments series event is a regular doubles, set for 10 a.m. April 19 at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes in Canton.

Entry fee is $130 per team, with teams bowling four games before the field is cut to the top four for single-game elimination match play.

In order to qualify for the series’ singles finale in May, bowlers must have participated in four events during the course of the season. Those bowlers with three events heading into the doubles are Tony Carson, John Cole, Ray Deckman, Jesse Gonzales, Adam Kutz, Mike Leggett, Kevin Schott, Cooper Smith, Charles Spencer, Bradley Stevens and Viktor Varner.

PBA players are not permitted, However PBA50 players with no national titles can bowl. The tourney is bowled on a house lane condition.

OTHER EVENTS

PORTAGE COUNTY USBC: The Portage County Masters drew a field of 51 players last weekend, with Steve Pennington winning the title with a 278-267 win over Canton’s Scott Vandegrift, the No. 1 seed, in the title match. Pennington, who shot a 300 earlier in the event, defeated Tax Moore 229-224 in the semifinals. The tournament had four games each bowled at Spins Bowl Kent, Sky Lanes and 11th Frame before the cut to the final 16 players for double elimination match play. CLEVELAND MASTERS: The Bernie Vozar Masters is sold out with 64 players in the field and the Jacqueline Kirk-Terrell Queens has six openings in the field remaining. The events are set for 9 a.m. April 19 at AMF Brookgate Lanes in Brookpark. The Masters will have an eight-game qualifying round while the women will bowl a six-game qualifier, both on sport oil patterns. Entry fee is $100 for each. MINERVA MASTERS: Kenny Lambert Jr. defeated Sean Kelly 238-184 to claim the Minerva Masters title on Sunday at Minerva Bowl. The 17th annual event featured a four-game qualifying block followed by a cut to the top 10 for match play. Bowlers had to be Minerva Bowl paying participants. See complete results below:

CASH IS KING: The fourth annual Cash is King Spring Bling Doubles is set for May 16 through 18 at Amron Lanes in Canfield. Entry fee is $50 per team, with divisions for men and mixed. This is a handicapped event, with bowlers rolling three games on a house oil pattern. See entry information below.

PBA QUALIFIER: The PBA-PBA50 regional qualifier event drew 96 entries to Rebman Recreation, with 17 spots for the PBA regional in May and three more spots for the PBA50 regional in July being awarded. A second qualifying event is set for 10 a.m. April 27. For results from the first event and an entry for the second, see below.

FURBAY ELECTRIC OPEN: The 23rd Furbay Electric Open is set for 9 a.m. May 4 at AMF Hall of Fane Lanes with an $80 entry fee. Bowlers will bowl five qualifying games before the field is cut to either 16 or 20 depending on the number of entries for two-game match pay by seed, with the top four or five reaching the stepladder finals. First place is worth $1,000, based on 72 entries. See an entry form below:

LEGACY LANES: Amber Sells and Kevin Kittell earned the win to defend their 2024 title during the 47th annual Mixed Doubles tournament, which concluded last weekend at Legacy Lanes and Lounge in Coshocton. A record field of 173 teams participated. The top 82 teams are listed below:
