Tourney report: West shoots 802 as new leaders emerge in Ohio State USBC Women’s Championships

CANTON — New leaders have emerged in several categories as the Ohio State USBC Women’s Championships at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes (doubles and singles) and Eastbury Bowling Center (team) heads into its final weekend.

Centerville’s Angel West highlighted Week 3 of the competition by compiling an 802 scratch series doing the singles competition at AMF Hall of Fame to take over the lead in singles by 41 pins over Centerville’s Andrea Behr (761). They were the first two players to crack 700 or higher in actual singles.

In addition, West took the overall lead in all-events scratch with 2,052, finishing just one pin ahead of Centerville’s Shannon Pluhowski (2,051), with Behr sitting third (2,048) and Brunswick’s Melissa Voytko fourth (2,034) in a tight competition.

West added 643 during team event at Eastbury and opened with 607 in doubles at AMF Hall of Fame. She had games of 279, 298 and 225 for the 802 — her first career 800 series.

“What makes this even more meaningful is that my dad, Bryan Scott West, was able to witness it,” West said in a Facebook post. “We both had tears of joy as we hugged. This is something we will cherish for a long time. Thank you to the ladies for staying and watching. It means a lot to have your support.”

The team of Voytko and Charmaine Allen of Brunswick also took over the scratch doubles lead with 1,346.

St. Henry’s Emily Brunswick of St. Henry continues to hold the lead in handicap all-events with 2,345, followed by Beloit’s Tanya Kyser (2,253) and Carrollton’s Jennifer Casey (2,232).

OHIO STATE USBC OPEN

AKRON — A pair of bowlers participating out of Lewis Center continue to lead the scratch all-events category through eight weekends during the Ohio State USBC Open Championships, being conducted at AMF Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn (team) and Station 300 (doubles and singles)  in Akron.

Cassidy Schaub holds the overall lead with 2,096, followed by Dan Higgins with 2,037. The tournament runs weekends through May 4.

There is a new team handicap leader with Pla-Mor Lanes #13 from Coldwater taking the top spot with 3,505.

UPCOMING EVENTS

COLLEGE BOWL TOURNAMENTS: The final regular-season College Bowl Tournament Series event will be a regular doubles at 10 a.m. April 19 at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes. This is a change from the original schedule due to the Ohio USBC Women’s State Tournament. Entry fee is $130 per team, with teams bowling four qualifying games before the field is cut to the top eight for single-game elimination match play. To qualify for the year-end singles tournament at 10 a.m. May 10 at Park Centre Lanes, bowlers must have bowled in at least four series events. Following the March event, there are 34 bowlers who are eligible, including (in alphabetical order): Branden Ball, Brian Ball, Chase Barstow, Brandon Clifford, Matt Coffelt, Ray Cook, Bob Eckenrode, Jim Fellows, Josh Haddad, Mark Herdlick, Steve Hlabse, Joe Hostetler, Brandon Leggett, Alex Lincoln, Eric Long, Alex McCourry, Brett McCourry, Dave McLaughlin, John Shannon Price, John Randolph, Tucker Robbins, Robert Sample, Chris Simon, Derrick Simon, Mike Spitale, Jeff Sustarsic, Ryan Suter, Frank Testa, Ryan Trowbridge, Scott Vandegrift, Jack Wells, Jim Williams, Dexter Worthy, and Keith Zeigler. PORTAGE COUNTY MASTERS: The 2025 Portage County Masters is set for 9 a.m. April 12 and 13 at three centers with a $125 entry fee. Bowlers will roll four games at Spins Bowl Kent at 9 a.m. April 12 and four more games at Sky Lanes at 3 p.m. Sunday, bowlers will roll four more games at 11th Frame at 9 a.m. with total pinfall carrying over. All blocks will be on a house oil pattern. The field will then be cut to the top 16 for bracket double-elimination match play. The top three will bowl the stepladder finals. CLEVELAND MASTERS: AND QUEENS: The Bernie Vozar Masters is sold out with 64 players in the field and the Jacqueline Kirk-Terrell Queens has 21 players in the field with opening available. The events are set for 9 a.m. April 19 at AMF Brookgate Lanes in Brookpark. The Masters will have an eight-game qualifying round while the women will bowl a six-game qualifier, both on sport oil patterns. Entry fee is $100 for each. FURBAY ELECTRIC OPEN: The 23rd Furbay Electric Open is set for 9 a.m. May 4 at AMF Hall of Fane Lanes with an $80 entry fee. Bowlers will bowl five qualifying games before the field is cut to either 16 or 20 depending on the number of entries for two-game match pay by seed, with the top four or five reaching the stepladder finals. First place is worth $1,000, based on 72 entries. See an entry form below:


VALIE LANES DOUBLES: The 37th annual Valie Lies doubles handicapped tournament runs weekends through May 31 at the center in Jewett. The event is for men, women or mixed teams, with bowlers rolling four qualifying games and dropped their lowest score Entry fee is $50 per team. See the entry form below:

TOURNEY RESULTS

HIT DEM POCKETS: The doubles team of Chris Steele and Tony Carson finished with 2,393 total pinfall over five games to top the HDP Handicap Doubles Sweeper on Sunday at North Woods Lanes in Macedonia. The remainder of the top four in the 24-team field included Vincent Bellar-Ryan Ashby (2,384); John Price-Josh Truman and Leonard Perkins-Jesse Gray (2,367). Bellar turned in the top singles showing with 1,229. During the winners’ sixth game, the team of Ulysses Rand and Sharita Beckham took hours with 502 to earn the bonus among five teams. The date for the next event is to be announced.

PORTAGE COUNTY SENIOR MEMORIAL: Dave Joseph took first place in the Portage County USBC Senior Memorial last weekend at Spins Bowl Kent. The remainder of the top four included Bobby Schultz, Keith Lang and Terry White. No other results were available. Bowlers rolled three qualifying games before the field was cut for two more games in the handicapped event. Total pinfall for five games determined the winners in the age 50 and older event.

LEGACY LANES: The fourth annual Mixed Doubles event concludes Saturday and Sunday at Legacy Lanes and Lounge in Coshocton. Entry fee is $60 per team, with Saturday shifts at 3 p.m. and Sunday shifts at 12:30 p.m. Entry fee is $60 per team. Here are the results after Week 2 of the three-week event:

BOULEVARD LANES: Austin Reinerts emerged as the winner during the annual Larry Stein Memorial Shootout at Boulevard Lanes in Dover. Complete standings were not available.

PBA TOUR

REGIONAL DOUBLES: The PBA-PBA50 Doubles-Clutch Lanes Central Open is set for Saturday at Clutch Lanes and Sports Center in Cuyahoga Falls with shifts at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Teams will roll eight qualifying games on each shift before the entire field is cut to the top 12 teams for Sunday’s bracket match play beginning at 9 a.m. Admission is free. Several regular PBA Tour and PBA50 Tour players are in the field.

PBA TOUR: The PBA Tournament of Champions begins Monday at AMF Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn, beginning with Monday’s pre-tournament qualifier at 9 a.m. See the remainder of the schedule and roster here:
