PLANO, Texas – A pair of Texas bowlers took over the lead in the boysdivisions of the 2025 Teen Masters Championships after Monday’s second round.
Braden McDonough of Coppell, Texas, had a steady round of 1,246 for his six games at Plano Super Bowl, where he practices at least once a week. He had games of 215, 180, 213, 233, 187 and 218 on the short-oil pattern and had a 12-game pinfall total of 2,534. That gave him a 65-pin lead in the boys’ 19U division.
Carter Wescott of Green Bay, Wis., was in second at 2,469, while Ty Carter of Johns Creek, Ga., who finished eighth in last year’s 15U division, was third at 2,385.
First-round leader Louis Schontz of Manchester, Iowa, fell to fourth at 2,380, just ahead of Taylon Bernier of New Britain, Conn. (2,375), and E.J. Vallesteros of Honolulu, Hawaii (2,371).
In the boys’ 15U division, Ethan Nguyen of nearby Sachse, Texas, closed out the second round with a 255 game and moved into the lead with a 12-game pinfall total of 2,455. His other games were 211, 191, 168, 205 and 186, giving him an overall average of 204.6.
Nguyen opened the event with a tournament-high 289 game on Sunday’s long-oil pattern.
Lucas Drisdel of Chicago rolled a 1,280 in the second round and jumped from sixth place to second with 2,431 – just 14 pins behind the 15U leader.
Drisdel had games of 185, 237, 234, 209, 170 and 245 in the second round to up his overall average to 202.6.
Malachi Wilson of Jonesboro, Ga., was third with 2,389 and first-round leader Tatum Lee of Minot, N.D. fourth with 2,387.
In the girls’ competition, the leaders remained the same.
But in the 19U division, Grace Zuerner of Indianapolis overcame a 109 opening game and still managed to increase her lead to 162 pins over Ohioan Mabel Adams of Defiance.
Zuerner came back with high games of 232, 199 and a closing 194 to build her lead. She had a 12-game pinfall total of 2,336 for a 194.7 average.
Adams was in second at 2,174, just 18 pins ahead of Savannah Burgin of Grapevine, Texas, and 21 more than Briana Provenzano of Bristol, Conn.
Defending girls 15U champion Anna Antony of Farmington, Conn., upped her lead to 204 pins over the field after an up-and-down second round.
But high games of 230 and 201 helped her build her advantage over Josie Dambrino of Hoover, Ala. Antony had a pinfall total of 2,206, while Dambrino was at 2,002.
The field of 104 players will bowl on dual patterns on Tuesday before a cut is made to the top 25 percent in all four divisions for Wednesday’s championship finals.
