Adult-PBA tourney report: Results in for Christmas In July, Battle of States events announced

MACEDONIA — Hit Dem Pockets’ Christmas in July tournament drew a total of 664 entries over various events during its two-weekend run at North Woods Lanes.

Right-hander Dean Vargo was the dominant player during the tourney, capturing first-place honors in mixed doubles (with Hannah Klein), handicap doubles (with Ryan Liederbach), scratch doubles (with Matt Zitnik), tie in scratch singles (with Kyle Brooks) and second place in  handicap singles (to Tim Lynch).

DOUBLE L BATTLE OF STATES

AKRON — The Double L Shootout Series Battle of the States drew 110 teams to Saturday’s event at Spins Bowl Akron.

The team Hold Kyle Up took first place with 2,928 in the handicapped event, with The Firm #1 taking second with 2,829 and Just a King Thang finishing third with 2,820 in unofficial, but complete standings.

In the Friday mixed doubles event that preceded the Battle of the States at Spins Bowl Akron, the team of Hudson and Davis took honors with 1,497 in the handicapped event, with Daniels-Price taking second (1,461) and Stoffel-saccone finishing third (1,453). A total of 10 teams cashed in the event with the low being at 1,393 in official standings.

The low to cash unofficially in the team event was at 2,675.

LEGACY LANES: Amber Sells took honors during the Put Up or Shut Up Scratch Tournament at Legacy Lanes in Coshocton with 26 players in the field. The remainder of the top five included Rochard Sstevens, Faith Smith, Chris Simon, Chris Miller, Alex Griffith and Josh Colley. The next event will be a 9-pin no-tap event Sunday. MONDAY NIGHT SPORT SHOT SWEEPER: Patrick Dombrowski took first place in the Monday Night sweeper at Rollhouse Parma on the 2025 Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles oil pattern. The remainder of the top four included. Casey Cohagan, Dean Vargo and Thomas Slagle with Steve Hlabse earning the other cash spot. The next Monday sweeper is at 7 p.m. Monday at Rollhouse Parma, with the 2025 U.S. Open No. 4 oil pattern (52 feet) being employed. Entry fee is $40, with bowlers rolling four scratch qualifying games before the field is cut to the top four or five for the stepladder finals. OHIO MATCHPLAY TOURNAMENTS: A Scratch Singles Senior Shootout is set for 1 p.m. Aug. 9 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in Columbus with a $125 entry fee. The event is open to b owners age 50 and older. Bowlers will roll five qualifying games before the field is cut for two-game match-play rounds, with rounds two through fur being single game matches. See information below:

ROYAL RUMBLE: Axion Events is presenting the BowlaMania IV Royal Rumble, with squads at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. July 26 at Wickliffe Lanes in Wickliffe. HILES TOURNAMENTS: The next Summer Sports Shot Series event will be on the PBA Bat oil pattern at 8 p.m. Friday at Mt. Lebanon Lanes in Pittsburgh. Entry fee is $45, with discounts of $5 for juniors, seniors and veterans. The format is four qualifying games in the scratch event before the field is cut to the top 32 for pod-style match play, with four bowlers eventually meeting for the title. Starting time is 8 p.m. Last week’s top four Ethan McDonald, Albert Zarbaugh, Tyler Meredith and Eddie Zuzak on the PBA Badger pattern. AKRON OPEN: The sixth annual Akron Open will return to Station 300 in Akron on Aug. 23 and 24 with a $130 entry fee.  The Open will consist of a six-game qualifier, with shifts available at 9 a.m. or 4 p.m. before the overall field is cut on a 1-in-5 ratio for a Sunday’s cashers round at 9 a.m. That group will bowl five more games with pinfall carrying over. The field then will be cut again to the top 24 for five more games before the final cut to the top five for a traditional stepladder finals. Ashland’s two-handed lefty Cassidy Schaub is the two-time defending champion in the event. In addition, a four-game scratch doubles event will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 22. OHIO MASTERS: The 2025 Ohio Masters is set for Aug. 30 and 31 at HP Lanes in Columbus with a new format and entry fee for the eighth annual event. Tournament officials announced this week that the new lane surfaces will not be installed in time for this event. This event is open to all adult bowlers who are sanctioned and live within an Ohio State USBC association. It also is open to adult bowlers who bowled a minimum of nine games in an Ohio sanctioned association league during the 2024-2025 season, but the bowler doesn’t have to do both. Bowlers will bowl an eight-game qualifying round Aug. 30 with a $125 entry fee beginning at noon. There is a maximum field of 144 players. The field then will be cut to the top 32 based on 128 entries, with a minimum of 24 bowlers being taken to the Aug. 31 match-play rounds. During match play, players will be seeded into a two-game single-elimination, total-pinfall matches until there is a champion. No youth bowlers are permitted in this event. BURNS MEMORIAL: The Teresa J. Burns Junior-Senior Doubles Handicap Memorial event is set for 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Aug. 20 at Roseland Lanes in Oakwood. Entry fee is $100 per team.

PROFESSIONAL BOWLERS ASSOCIATION

CENTRAL REGION: Ryan Speer defeated Dean Vargo 180-177 in the title match to captured the PBA Luckey strike Grove City Central Open last weekend at AMF Stardust Lanes in Grove City. Vargo, who was seeded sixth after qualifying, defeated Zac Tackett 235-184 in the semifinals to reach the title match. Speer, the No. 8 seed, stopped Scott McIntire 179-175 in the semifinals. NEXT UP: Next are a pair of PBA50 events, with the Gary Schluchte Memorial Central-Midwest Classic set for July 25 through July 27 and the Ohio Lottery Baldo Campana & Dave D-Entremont Memorial Central Open set for July 28 through July 30. Admission is free for both events. There also is a pro-am connected with the Campana-D’Entremont event at Rebman Recreation in Lorain. Contact the center for information. The next regular PBA regional Central event is Aug. 15-17 in Minster, the start of the three-tournament run as part of the Budweiser Cup.
