H.S. bowling: Tallmadge tops Summit Division I sectional boys field

AKRON — With junior Nathan Bishop rolling the lone 700 series, Tallmadge earned its second sectional title in three years during Friday’s OHSAA Summit Division I sectional boys bowling tournament at Spins Bowl Akron.

The Blue Devils led from start to finish in the 17-team field, finishing with 3,932 total pinfall during the three regular team games and six Baker System games to lead four teams to the 10 a.m. Feb. 22 Northeast District tournament at Rebman Recreation in Lorain.

Also advancing were the top four individuals who were not members of advancing teams.

Tallmadge, which led by 229 pins after the opening three teams games and posted the lone 1,000 game (1,029) in Game 3, will be joined by Medina (3,827), Buckeye (2,791) and Walsh Jesuit (3,758), which finished 94 pins ahead of fifth-place Akron Hoban (3,664). The Knights made a charge by shooting the high Baker series (1,113), but were 128 pins out of the cut after the three team games.

Bishop was the top individual with 710 to lead the Devils, with sophomore Chase Jonke adding 628 as seven individuals shot 600 or higher on the OHSAA sectional-district oil pattern.

Buckeye junior John Ambrose was the individual runner-up with 668 while Akron Buchtel senior Marcus Brown was third overall but finished as the leading individual qualifier with a 660, shooting 254 in Game 3.

Other individual qualifiers included Cuyahoga Falls junior Jonathan Rasch (652), who was coming off a foot injury suffered during last week’s high school tourney at Spins Bowl Akron; Firestone senior Quinn Meeker (627); and Ellet senior Logan Bennett, who advanced by shooting 230 his final game.

Ambrose posted the high game wth 269 in Game 2 while Jonken had 257. Medina had the high Baker game of 240, with only six 200 games being rolled overall during the six-game set.

The Stark Division I boys sectional is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Eastbury Bowling Center with 15 teams in the field. Four teams and four individuals who are not on qualifying teams will advance to the Northeast District from that sectional.
