LORAIN — Coventry shot a Baker System high 1,188 for six games as the Comets claimed the OHSAA Northeast District Division II boys high school bowling title Friday at Rebman Recreation.
In a field of 17 teams, the Comets, who led following the opening three team games with 3,024, averaged 198 to lead four teams to next weekend’s OHSAA Division II State Championships in Columbus.
The format was three regular team games and six Baker games.
Coventry, which will be joining the Stark County High School Bowling Conference in the future, sat third after the opening two regular games, but shot 1,015 in Game 3 to take over the top spot. But the race with Faiport Harbor Harding, which led after each of the first two games, was tight until the final two Baker games.
Also advancing are Fairport Harbor (4,136), Warren Champion (4,101) and Mentor Lake Catholic (4,093). Fairport and Coventry were the only two teams with two 1,000 games. The Golden Flashes — ninth after Game 1 and eighth after Game 2 — shot a tourney-high 1,103 in Game 3 to jump into the top four.
The top four did not change the remainder of the day after Game 3, except for changes in positions. Lake Catholic finished 64 pins in front of Brooklyn to claim the final team spot.
Coventry junior Wade Allen, honorable mention All-Ohio a year ago, claimed the individual district title with a 738 series, finishing 37 pins ahead of Fairport senior Eddie Kofcheck (701). They had the lone 700 series of the day.
Coventry senior Aidan Jensen also made the all-tournament team, which included the top eight overall individuals, with a 652 to finish seventh. Skippers sophomore Evan Krajewski finished sixth (654).
Senior Mario Humenik led Champion with 641 and junior Kyle Kolat added 611 as 17 players shot 600 or higher. The cut for the all-tournament team was at 650. Sophomore Mason Panhorst led Lake Catholic with 685, good for third overall, and senior Tristan Nigrelli added 629.
INDIVIDUALS ADVANCE
Four individuals who were not members of state-bound teams also advanced.
Leading those four was Lake Center Christian senior Tristan Roberts, making his first state appearance after a 667, good for fourth overall.
He is joined by Southington Chalker sophomore T.J. Williams (657); Triway junior Luke Carey (650); and Brooklyn senior Adam Cowper (639), who will be making his third straight state appearance. Cowper edged Lincoln West sophomore Le’don Baxter (634) for the final spot.
Panhorst recorded the day’s high game with 275 in Game 2, while Fairport had the high Baker game of 246. Williams was the lone sectional individual qualifier to advance to state.
The Division II girls take center stage at 10 a.m. Saturday for the OHSAA Northeast District at Rebman Recreation, again with four teams and four individuals advancing to state.
Division I will follow Sunday (boys) and Monday (girls), also at 10 a.m. Tickets must be purchased online with no cash being accepted at the door.
