H.S. tourneys: Central Catholic, Minerva, Carrollton capture titles

Central Catholic’s girls topped the field during the Ohio Private School State Challenge in Columbus on Saturday

COLUMBUS — The Central Catholic High School girls bowling team took first place during Saturday’s first Ohio Private School State Challenge at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

The Crusaders, the qualifying leaders in the seven-team field with 2,497 total pinfall — 124 pins ahead of second-place Akron Hoban — defeated No. 3 seed Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame 288-274 in a two-game Baker System match to claim the win. Central had games of 134 and 154 in the title round.

Earlier, the Crusaders advanced to the finals with 349 total, the same at Mount Notre Dame, in the semifinal round.

Central’s Alina Stebbins finished second individually with a two-game 382 series, 17 pins behind individual leader Carly Jones of Akron Hoban. Central’s Alex Vargo was third with 369 as all thee were part of the all-tournament team.

Sarah Colucy also shot 284 for the Crusaders.

In the boys division, Cincinnati Elder nipped Cincinnati St. Xavier 366-363 in the title match.

Central Catholic’s boys were 13th in the 13-team boys field with 2,192 total pinfall.

Cincinnati Seven Hills stopped Akron Hoban 28-25 in a two-frame rolloff to advance to the eight-team championship round following a tie for the final spot. The Knights finished with 2,571 total pinfall,

Nick Fortunato led the Knights with a 367 series and Grant Linder added 364. Peyton Robbins was high for Central with 320, and Logan Gawiak added 300.

Elder was the qualifying leader with 3,015 total pinfall, 207 pins ahead of St. Xavier. Lutheran West’s Josh Masianich was the individual champion with a 522 two-game series.

Minerva’s boys took first place during the Dover Invitational on Saturday at Wabash Lanes.

DOVER — The Minerva boys, second-seeded entering the championship round, defeated top-seeded East Liverpool 2-1 in a best-of-three Baker System final to win Saturday’s Dover Invitational at Wabash Lanes.

The Lions stopped No. 3 seed Garaay 2-0 in the semifinal round to advance.

East Liverpool was the qualifying leader with 3,838 total pinfall, 95 pinas ahead of the Lions as four teams made the cut to the championship round. Other area finishers included Garaway (3,737), New Philadelphia (3,633), Tuscarawas Central Catholic (3,094), Dover (2,965) and Indian Valley (2,862).

East Liverpool’s Gavin Maze was the top individual with 687. Minerva’s Ahdyn Lautzenheiser finished third with 666, and Michael May added 615.

Among other top-10 finishers, Garaway’s Clayton Burky had 660, Dover’s Jacob Shanklin had 649, New Philadelphia’s Alex Knisely 637 and Garaway’s Jake Braun 596.

In the girls division, No. 2-seed River View captured the title with a 2-1 win over fourth-seeded New Philadelphia in the title match.

Dover, which led qualifying with 3,235 total pinfall (133 pins ahead of River View), fell to the Quakers 2-0 in the semifinal round and finished fourth. Minerva, the No. 3 seed with 3,064, lost to River View 2-1 and finished third.

Among other girls team finishers, Tusky Central had 2,842, Garaway 2,654 and Indian Valley 2,595.

Dover’s Kaylie Gibson was the individual champion with a 635 series, and Natalie Nealey added 529. Graci Wigfield (556), Maggie Compher (546) and Delaney Riggle (504) led New Philadelphia.

Minerva was led by Lydia Sanor’s 504 and 487 from Jadynn Thompson.

Carrollton sweeps Rootstown tourney

KENT — Carrollton took Division II boys honors and East Canton finished fourth during Saturday’s Rover Sectional Preview at Spins Bowl Kent.

The Warriors finished with a total pinfall of 4,341, 116 pins ahead of second-place Rootstown. Bryce Taylor led the Warriors with a tourney-high 704 series, while Kobe Green added 624 an Ian Pallaye had 599.

The Hornets finished with 3,977. Bryce Beadnell led East Canton with a 670 series, fourth high overall with a high game of 266. Simeon Snyder added a 578 series, and Andrew Wade had 577.

In the girls division, Carrollton also took top honors with 3,900, 166 pins ahead of second-place Crestwood. Tara Oberlin had the tourney’s high series to lead the Warriors with 629 and Kellyn Harsg added 546. Joey Elliott also had the tourney’s high game with 252 despite bowling only two games.

East Canton’s girls finished sixth overall with 3,097. Tori Alspaugh finished fourth individually with a 581 series.

The tourney drew seven boys teams and nine girls.
