Division II: Carrollton girls complete sweep in East sectional

NEW PHILADELPHIA — Carrollton rode a tourney-high 989 Baker System series to claim the title during Wednesday’s Division II East girls sectional at Boulevard Lanes.

The Warriors, who trailed Conotton Valley by 10 pins following the opening three regular games, finished with 3,523 total pinfall to take honors by just 15 pins over the Rockets (3,508).

Three other Stark County Conference teams — Minerva (third, 3,508), Claymont (fourth, 3,219) and Sandy Valley (sixth,3,058) also qualified for district play along with St. Clairsville (3,060) in the 20-team field, which again bowled in two shifts.

Five of the top six teams came out of the morning shift. Sandy Valley gained the final qualifying spot by 69 pins over Harrison Central.

The top six teams and top six individuals who were not members of advancing teams move on the East District tournament, set for noon Feb. 24 at Legacy Lanes in Coshocton.

The Warriors boys captured that division’s sectional title Tuesday at St. Clair Lanes to lead district qualifiers. Minerva and Conotton Valley also had their boys teams advance.

Carrollton junior Aubrey Taylor took the individual title with a 599 series. Also leading the Warriors were junior Joline Greaves with 525 and senior Kellyn Harsh with 505.

East Liverpool freshman as the top individual qualifier, finishing third with a 566 series. Other individual advancing included Harrison Central senior Aleyna Runevitch (555), Tuscarawas Central Catholic senior Emma Slates (474), Maysville junior Halie Ireton (472), Barnesville junior Reagan Campbell (464) and East Liverpool senior Delaney Riggle (463).

Conotton Valley placed three players in the top 10 individually, including juniors Katie Schaar (546) and Daphne Stuber (535) and sophomore Mackenzie Willoouighby (544).

Freshman Jadynn Thompson led Minerva with a 559 series, followed by sophomore Shelby Worrell (553) and junior Lydia Sanor (500).

Sandy Valley junior Miah Delaney finished second individually with a 566 series to lead the Cardinals, followed by junior Joey Boyer (532).

Freshman Rylee Groh led Claymont with a 483 series.

Among other area teams not advancing were Tusky Central (11th, 2,822), Indian Valley (12th, 2,787) and Garaway (16th, 2,613).
