H.S. tourneys: Stark Conference teams bring home titles during MLK weekend events

Lake High School captured the Martin Luther King Day Tournament on Monday at Stonehedge Family Fun Center in Akron.

MLK TOURNAMENT

AKRON — It took a combination effort from both the girls and boys teams as Lake earned the overall title in the 10th annual Martin Luther King Day High School Tournament at Stonehedge Family Fun Center on Monday.

In the unique event, scores from both the boys and girls teams were combined to determine overall standings in the 19-team field.

Teams bowled three regular games and six Baker System games before the field was cut to the top eight for rounds of best-of-three Baker System matches. The tournament was bowled on the OHSAA 2023 sectional oil pattern.

Lake, which was the No. 5 seed, topped No. 4 seed Akron Hoban (2-1) and top-seeded Nordonia (2-0) before disposing of No. 6 seed Struthers (2-0) to claim the title.

Lake finished qualifying with 6,600 total pinfall. Nordonia was the top seed with 7,357, followed by Boardman (6,817) and Tallmadge (6,751).

During qualifying, the Blue Streaks boys were led by Zac Abbott, who gad a 660 series and Brady Tomato, who finished with 574. The girls were led by Ashlee Cunningham’s 555 and 498 from Ali Templeton.

“In the bracket finals, the guys settled in and started to string the marks together, but it was really the girls who made the difference, being probably three-to-four marks better per baker game than in the preliminaries,” Lake head coach Pat King said. “Both Ashlee Cunningham on the grls side, and Zac Abbott on the boys side were solid in their anchor roles, making statements as they were closing out the games.

“We had marks from all the bowlers in clutch situations when needed to help bring home the title.”

It marked the first tournament title for the Blue Streaks.
