Tourney report: Stark USBC announces official singles, doubles results; Akron Open returns

CANTON — The Stark County USBC has announced its official results in singles, doubles and all-events from the 104th Open and 82nd Women’s Championships, which ended Friday at Eastbury Bowling Center.

Canton left-hander Alex McCourry captured the Open all-events scratch title with 2,182 total pinfall, with Massillon right-hander Brian Ball finishing second (2,145) and Canton two-handed righty Zachary McCutchan taking third (2,143).

In the handicap all-events division, Canton’s Austin Burwell took honors with 2,341, followed by Massillon’s Hunter Davis (2,306) and Canton’s Jay Kennedy (2,256).

Singles honors in the Open Championships went to Canal Fulton’s Dave Hentzell Jr. .with 843, followed by Alliance’s Brandon Mitzel (824) and Davis (813).

USBC Bowling Hall of Fame 2025 inductee Chrissy Brady and Scott Brady from Paris took honors the Open handicap doubles with 1,519, followed by Buwell and Marco Godoy (1,490) and Jackie and Johnny Shahan, also of Paris, (1,466).

In the women’s division, Massillon Mandi Testa claimed two titles, topping actual all-events with 2,098 and handicap all-events with the same total. Massillon’s Chelsea Dorosky was runner-up in both events (2,069 actual, 2,015 handicap), with Massillon’s Terri Gaynor taking third in handicap all events (2,048) and North Canton’s Renae Shafer doing the same in actual (1,922),

Gaynor also finished first in handicap singles with 743, followed by a three-way tie between Canton’s Mary Kolm, North Canton’s Dawn Altimore and Testa with 712 each.

Red (Tressa) Grossenbacher and Pamela Towns took the handicap women’s doubles with 1,316, followed by Peggy Chovan and Gaynor (1,312) and Canton’s Brandy Hall and Laura Mercina (1,310).

Tournament checks and awards will be available during the group’s annual meeting, set for 7 p.m. May 28 at the Meadowlake Banquet Center in Canton.

AKRON OPEN RETURNS

The sixth annual Akron Open will return to Station 300 in Akron on Aug. 23 and 24 with a $130 entry fee. The exact format will be announced.

The 2024 Open consisted of a six-game qualifier before the field was cut for a Sunday’s cashers round. A total of 10 more games in two cashers’ rounds were bowled Sunday prior to the single-elimination stepladder finals.

Ashland’s two-handed lefty Cassidy Schaub is the two-time defending champion in the event.

OTHER EVENTS

OHIO MASTERS: The 2025 Ohio Masters is set for Aug. 30 and 31 at HP Lanes with a new format and entry fee for the eighth annual event.

This event is open to all adult bowlers who are sanctioned and live within an Ohio State USBC association. It also is open to adult bowlers who bowled a minimum of nine games in an Ohio sanctioned association league during the 2024-2025 season, but the bowler doesn’t have to do both. Bowlers will bowl an eight-game qualifying round Aug. 30 with a $125 entry fee beginning at noon. There is a maximum field of 144 players. The field then will be cut to the top 32 based on 128 entries, with a minimum of 24 bowlers being taken to the Aug. 31 match-play rounds. During match play, players will be seeded into a two-game single-elimination, total-pinfall matches until there is a champion. No youth bowlers are permitted in this event. HIT DEM POCKETS MASTERS: Hit Dem Pockets will hold its Masters Scratch Tournament at 10 a.m. May 24 at North Woods Lanes in Macedonia. Entry fee is $140, with bowlers rolling eight qualifying games before the field is cut for bracket-style single-game eliminator match play. First place will be worth $2,500, based on 50 participants. Oil pattern will be the Kegel Titanium 44-foot pattern. The field is capped at 60 players. HIT DEM POCKETS QUEENS: Hit Dem Pockets also has announced the date for its annual Queens Tournament, which is set for 10 a.m. June 21 at North Woods Lanes in Macedonia. Entry fee is $125, with bowlers rolling eight qualifying games before the field is cut for basket-style single-game elimination match play by seed. First place will pay $2,000 based off 50 entries. The oil pattern will be the 2023 PWBA Cleveland Regional pattern.
