Stark USBC holds adult-junior scholarship doubles event

JACKSON TWP. — With a doubles score of 1,487 (including handicap), the team of GlenOak High School junior Alex Howard and head coach Dirk Hartman of Clinton finished with a 1,487 total pinfall to top the field during Saturday’s Stark County USBC Junior-Adult Scholarship Tournament at Park Centre Lanes.

The inaugural event drew 40 teams spread over four divisions, with scholarships being awarded in each division based on entries. The Stark County USBC donated an additional $500 to the prize fund.

Howard and Hartman topped the ages 15-17 Majors division, winning by 55 pins.

Other division winners included:

• Nick J Sanko and Crystal Sanko of Massillon in the 5-8 Bantam division with 1,298;

• Braxton Burns and Renae Burns of Canton in the 12-14 Juniors division with 1,444;

• Kenneth Chaney and Rodney Kauffman of Canton in the 9-11 Preps division with 1,391.

High scratch series in the men’s division was by Dustin Dingler with 753, while Renae Burns had the high scratch series by a woman with 737, including a 268 game.

Ron Heaton recorded the high tournament game of 290.

Tournament results remain unofficial at this time pending verification of averages for handicap purposes.

Below are the top winners in each division who earned scholarship funds (amounts will be announced later and will be deposited in SMART fund accounts):

BANTAMS DOUBLES

1, Nick Sankt-Crystal Sanko (Massillon) 1,298; 2, Emmalee Ford-Jacquelynn Ford (East Canton) 1,284.

JUNIORS DOUBLES

1, Braxton Burns-Renae Burns (Canton) 1,444; 2, Nick Halmk-James Halm (Canton) 1,431; 3, Serenity Hartleben-Melodie Hartleben (North Canton) 1,423; 4, Gavin Ritter-Charles Smith (Canton) 1,395.

PREPS DOUBLES

1, Kenneth Chaney-Rodney Kauffman (Canton) 1,391; 2, Dylan Lint-Chris M. Lint (East Canton) 1,389; 3, Rylee McCoullough-Ronny McCullough II (Wooster) 1,354.

MAJORS DOUBLES

1, Alex Howard-Dirk Hartman (Clinton) 1,487; 2, Nathan Davis-Dawn Davis (Canton) 1,432; 3, Alexis Carper-Jeff Mowls (Canton) 1,425; 4, Chase Wensel-Chad Wensel (North Canton) 1,347.

NEXT EVENT

The Stark County USBC also will be holding a Youth Singles Challenge Shot Tournament at 10 a.m. May 14 at Eastbury Bowling Center.

Entry fee is $50 per bowler for the scratch event, which will be contested on the 37-foot Kegel Broadway Challenge oil pattern.

Bowlers will roll four qualifying games before the field is cut to the top eight for two-game, match-play elimination rounds.

The Stark County USBC again will add $500 to the scholarship fund.
