Tournament report: JTBA holds final event of 2023

DAYTON — No. 3 seed Clean Guthrie and No. 1 seed Bethany Strong captured the 18U division titles as the Junior Tournament Bowlers Association held its final 2023 event recently at Poelking Lanes South in Dayton.

The event drew 65 total entries in five divisions with $3,250 in SMART scholarship money being awarded.

In the boys 18U division, Guthrie reached the title match with a 408-385 victory over No. 2 seed Zachary Abbott of Uniontown before stopping No. 5 seed Tony Throckmorton 346-335 in the two-game total pinfall title match.

The top-seeded Strong topped No. 2 seed Allison Taylor 359-343 to claim the girls U18 title.

The JTBA will resume its schedule at the conclusion of the 2023-2024 Ohio High School Athletic Association bowling season.

ALLIANCE MASTERS SET

ALLIANCE — The third annual Alliance Masters is set for 9 a.m. Feb. 182,2024, at three Alliance centers.

The event will start with four games at Christopher Columbus Lanes, with bonus pins being awarded to the top eight finishers, ranging from 60 to four. The top 30 will then move on to Elks Lodge Lanes for four more games, with pins again being awarded to the top eight.

The top 16 will then move on to American Legion Lanes to bowl two more games before the final cut is made to the top eight. The remaining eight players will then bowl bracket match play.

Entry fee is $110.

In addition, the Ted Nagle Memorial Tournament returns to Christopher Columbus Lanes in Alliance at 10 a.m. Dec. 17.

Entry fee is $65, with bowlers rolling six qualifying games before the field is cut to the top five for the stepladder finals based on 48 entries.

COLLEGE BOWL TOURNNAMENTS: College Bowl Tournaments will hold its first doubles event of the season at 10 a.m. Oct. 21 at Park Centre Lanes in North Canton. Entry fee is $130 per team, with teams bowling four qualifying games before the field is cut for single-game match play. For information, contact Jeff Dimarzio via Facebook.

HILES BOWLING TOURNAMENTS: HBT is holding its third annual Baker Doubles event with shifts at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Oct. 28 at Meadows Lanes inside Hollywood Casino at at the Meadows in Pittsburgh. The finals will follow at 7 p.m. Each shift will bowl eight Baker System Games with a $120 entry fee. See the HBT tournament site on Facebook for details.

TRIWAY SWEEPER: Triway Lanes will hold another of its “Try Not To Suck” sweepers at 6 p.m. Oc.t 28. This event will be a 9-pin no-tap tournament with a $25 entry fee. Bowlers will roll four games. See Triway Lanes’ Facebook page for details. In addition, it will be hosting a four-game sweeper at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 with a $30 entry fee. Payouts will be 1-in-5.

SPINS DOUBLES SWEEPER: Spins Bowl Akron will hold a doubles scratch sweeper at 6 p.m. Oct. 29. Entry fee is $110, with teams bowling four qualifying games before the field is cut for the stepladder finals. For information, contact Frank Dallas via Facebook.

HIT DEM POCKETS: Viktor Varner and Ryan Liederbach emegered as the winners with plus 363 during Sunday’s HDP Handicap Doubles sweeper at North Woods Lanes in Macedonia. The nexts event is set for Oct. 21. In addition, the HDP Holiday Cash event is set for Nov. 11-12 with shifts at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Details will be upcoming. MOOSE TOURNAMENT: A Moose Handicap tournament is set for 10 a.m. Nov, 26 at Charger Lanes in Norton. Entry fee is $175 per team, with teams consisting of five persons. Entry is not limited to Moose members. Entry fee includes three games, steak dinner and refreshments at the Moose following bowling.This is a handicap event. YOUTH SINGLES: The Stark County USBC is holding a Youth Singles Fall Tournament at noon Oct. 14 at Eastbury Bowling Center. Entry fee is $40 for the handicap event, with competition in three divisions for girls and boys. It will be bowled on a house oil pattern. See the entry form below:

TRIO YOUTH: A Trio Youth tournament, sponsored by the Summit County USBC, is set for Oct. 12, 14 and 15 at Clutch Lanes and Sports Center in Cuyahoga Falls. Entry fee is $20 per bowler, with an option scratch fee. Squad times are 6 pm. Oct. 12 and 1 p.m. Oct. 14 and 15. See an entry form below:

ALUMNI TOURNAMENT: The Stark County High School Bowling Conference Alumni Tournament returns at 9 a.m. Oct. 22 at Park Centre Lanes. Each team member must represent the same high school in the Baker System event, which features 12 Baker System qualifying games before the field is cut to the top eight for best-of-five Baker match play. Entry fee is $170 per team with proceeds benefitting the conference. This event is limited to adult bowlers only. For information, see the conference’s Facebook page or see entry blanks below:

STARK USBC HALLOWEEN: The Stark County USBC will be holding its Halloween Youth Doubles at 10 a.m. Oct. 29 at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes in Canton. Bowlers will roll two individual games and four Baker System games on a house oil pattern with competition in three age divisions. Teams can be mixed (boy-girl). This is a handicap event with a $50 entry fee. See details below:
