AKRON — A field of 92 doubles teams will kick off a big tournament weekend at Station 300 on Friday as the revised Akron Open continues its seven-year run.

The four-game doubles sweeper begins at 7 p.m. with a full field. The seventh version of the Akron Open singles since the rebirth, put together by Jody Boyd, will hold a pair of shifts at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday with full fields of 138 players in each shift.

Ashland’s Cassidy Schaub, the two-time defending champion who has not failed to reach the stepladder finals in his five appearances, returns to lead the field. The former event was held at the former Colonial Village Lanes in Akron.

Following the six-game qualifying rounds, the top 1-in-5 (55 players if all 276 bowl) will return at 9 a.m. Sunday for the five-game Cashers’ Round, with pins carrying over.

After that round, the field will be cut again to the top 24 for five more games to determine the final remaining players for the stepladder finals to determine the champion. The event is being contested on Station 300’s house oil pattern.

Unlike in past years, PBA regional and tour pros will be missing from the field due to a competing event being held in Coldwater, the final event of the run for the Brunswick Cup. But Boyd was able to fill the field, with a waiting list.

Jesse Hawkins and Jeffrey Scott was the defending doubles sweeper champions.

This event is open to all adult bowlers who are sanctioned and live within an Ohio State USBC association. It also is open to adult bowlers who bowled a minimum of nine games in an Ohio sanctioned association league during the 2024-2025 season, but the bowler doesn’t have to do both.

Bowlers will bowl an eight-game qualifying round Aug. 30 with a $125 entry fee beginning at noon. Tournament officials will be in Akron this weekend accepting entries, with the current field at 50 as of Friday. The event is being contested on a special Ohio Masters oil pattern.

Following qualifying, the cut will be to the top 32 based on 128 entries, with a minimum of 24 bowlers being taken to the Aug. 31 match-play rounds. During match play, players will be seeded into a two-game single-elimination, total-pinfall matches until there is a champion. No youth bowlers are permitted in this event.
